In a powerful testament to artistic resilience, Seattle's A/NT Gallery will host "Under Fire: Sacred Art in Today's Ukraine," showcasing works by artists from the Lviv National Academy of Arts—some of whom continue creating from bomb shelters as their country defends itself against Russian aggression.
Running December 4-27, the exhibition bridges centuries of artistic tradition with contemporary crisis. It features both traditional icon paintings—a sacred art form dating to the 10th century—and modern interpretations by artists pushing boundaries with innovative techniques and non-traditional media.
The exhibition opens December 7 with a special performance by bandura virtuoso Valentine Lysenko. The bandura, Ukraine's national instrument, will add another layer of cultural depth to the evening. A curator discussion follows on December 19, featuring Skoropadskyy and co-curator Olexii Chereda sharing insights into the artists' experiences and creative processes during wartime.
Proceeds from artwork sales will support two humanitarian initiatives: scholarships for displaced students from Lviv National Academy of Arts and the amputee support program of the Ukrainian Association of Washington State.
The exhibition results from collaboration between Lviv National Academy of Arts, Radruzh School of Iconography, A/NT Gallery, and the Ukrainian Association of Washington State.
