Human body is a complex structure. When it is functioning properly, life is a joy; however if any organ in the body fails or malfunctions, then life becomes hell. Human body is a gift given to man by the nature.
A 51 year old resident of Khadakwasla, whose family has agricultural background was recently admitted to Sahyadri Hospitals Deccan as he had suffered from a Paralysis attack. However, the patient did not respond to the treatment and was declared brain dead by the doctors. During this, Mrs. Sharmila Padhye (Senior Medical Social Worker at Sahyadri Hospital) counseled the family (relatives) of brain dead patient about organ donation. After counseling, the family members of brain dead patient gave their consent for the organ donation. The organs such as two eyes, two kidneys and a liver was donated.
Brain is the most important part of human body. Brain controls the functioning of the human body. As brain controls functioning of the human body, once a person is declared brain dead his brain is unable to perform any function. Neurosurgeons or Neurologists after some tests decide whether a patient is brain dead or not.
The liver and kidney donated by brain dead patient helped two patients at Sahyadri Hospitals who were suffering from kidney and liver diseases. One liver and kidney was transplanted at Sahyadri Hospital and the remaining organs were transplanted at other hospitals. The surgery for two eyes and other kidney was performed at other hospital.
While talking about organ donation Mrs. Sharmila Padhye – Senior Medical Social Worker at Sahyadri Hospitals said, “To donate organs was a difficult decision, though the family has taken a very bold step which has actually given a lease of life to five needy patients. Organ donation is a serious subject; however in India there is less awareness about it. Therefore, even when a patient requires organs, those organs are not available.
Mrs. Sharmila Padhye further said, “It is very important to understand that by donating organs one man can give a new lease of life to another man. We at Sahyadri Hospitals are trying our level best to increase the social awareness about organ donation.”
One of the relatives of organ donor said, “We find solace in the fact that someone would be able to live a happier life with organs donated.”
