Madrid, Spain, July 01, 2013 - Spain’s female basketball team has won its second European Cup after beating France, the host country, by 70-69 in the final.

While the Spanish football team was unable to beat Brazil in the final of the Confederations Cup in Maracaná, the women’s basketball team was proclaimed European champion in France. It was an evenly-pitched match (70-69) in which the Spaniards won their second continental title 20 years after winning their first one in Italy.

The team has not lost a match during the competition. It has dominated each game and imposed its quality in every meeting, conveying the image of a strong and very close team.

This victory wipes out the memory of the team’s performance in the last European Championship, in which it failed to win a medal or even get through to the quarter finals for the first time in five years. That European Championship in Poland, which was the last time the two teams met, ended with Spain losing 55-79.

This match also served as a glorious send-off for Amaya Valdemoro, one of the Spanish team’s best players. She has played most matches with the country’s team (258) and won the most medals (six). Elsa Aguilar is also bidding farewell after winning six medals with ‘the Red’ team.
