This press release summarizes the benefits of aerobic activity on the weight loss efforts of obese teenagers.

Over the past three decades, the teenage obesity rate has nearly tripled in the United States, making it the number one health concern for Americans under the age of 18. The teenage obesity epidemic through out the world has been increasing is alarming as well as the rate of obesity induced health conditions that are affecting today's obese teenagers. Conditions such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and even fatty liver disease are being diagnosed in teenagers at a frightening pace and the medical community is taking notice.

Doctors across America recommend that parents promote an environment that encourages healthy eating and plenty of exercise as a way to prevent unhealthy weight gain in children. However, today's convenience driven society ultimately results in a larger number of children who eat poorly and get little exercise, leading to teenage obesity. Some experts also believe that there could be a genetic component as well.

The good news is that studies have shown that for teens of both genders, increased physical activity has an impact on several health factors. The participation in aerobic activity over weight training has the ability to lower body fat and lower the risk of developing weight related health conditions.

Well Fed Children, a blog dedicated to helping obese teens lose weight and get healthy, recently published information on this recent study that showed that teens who engage in aerobic activity in combination with weight lifting or just participated in aerobic activities alone were more likely to lose body fat and show significant improvement in a number of health categories than those who only participated in weight lifting exercises. This makes it vial for obese teens to engage in regular aerobic activities in order to lose weight and improve health over focusing on building muscle or strength. The level of benefit was more pronounced in girls than boys.

In addition, the study went on to show that obese teens were able to enjoy their physical activities when they were able to engage in both aerobic exercise as well as weight lifting. This finding was significant in that those who enjoyed the activity were more likely to stick to an exercise program and lose more weight as well as foster a higher level of self esteem.
