At a first glance, all these numbers might seem as some randomly chosen numbers to form these dozen numbers combination that are unique in the world. However, these numbers have a very specific meaning that is completely unique for each and every bank card.
First number on a card stands for the credit company category that issued the card. Visa or Master card belong to the category of banking and financial industry so first number on their cards is always 4 or 5.
First six numbers in numerical series stand for the institution that issued credit card. Numerical series on a Visa card starts with number 4, while Master cards have prefix 51-55. The remaining numbers in the line, excluding the last one stand for the unique number of bank account of card holder. The last number is control number and is used to check validity of the card. The fact that one number is the control number (it doesn't necessary has to be the last one!) only has its software meaning, to verify that all the previous numbers have been entered correctly. These are so-called modular controls that are often applied when people have to enter such a long line of numbers.
