Sepsis is one of the most common, least recognized illnesses in both the developed and developing countries. Worldwide, a person dies from Sepsis every few seconds.
In developed countries, Sepsis is dramatically increasing by an annual rate of between 8-13% over last decade. In developing countries malnutrition, poverty, lack of awareness and timely treatment all contribute to increase mortality.
Despite its remarkable incidence, sepsis is still unknown to public.

Sepsis is common and often deadly. It remains the primary cause of death from infection, despite advances in modern medicine like vaccines, antibiotics and intensive care. Sepsis must be prioritized as an emergency in order that all patients can expect basic interventions, including antibiotics and intravenous fluids within the first hour. Dr. Kapil Zirpe, Director, ICU, Ruby Hall Clinic, said, “1 in 4 patients in ICU suffer from severe sepsis, which is a preventable cause of patient mortality. Suspecting on time, diagnosing on time and timely intervention to save precious lives is an interdisciplinary team approach.”

Three major areas of sepsis care are:-
1. Rapidly recognizing at risk patients
2. Evaluating the patient’s clinical status
3. Providing appropriate timely therapy
Dr. Shirish Prayag, Director, Prayag Hospital informs, “Uncontrollable fever with breathlessness, dizziness, giddiness, sudden loss of consciousness could be signs of infection in the blood which is Sepsis.” Sepsis may lead to shock, multiple organ failure, and death, especially if not recognized early and treated promptly. Hence, when you see these signs rush the patient for emergency care to your hospital nearby.
Dr. Deepak Salunkhe, Chairman, ISCCM Pune branch, mentioned, “ISCCM, Pune branch has decided to publish a wealth of information (BOOKLET) on the diagnosis and management of adult sepsis, presented in a concise & easily accessible format in local language.” Content includes guidelines from leading organizations, useful algorithms& drug information.
Dr. Subhal Dixit, ICU Incharge, Sanjeevan and MGM Hospital, said, “Sepsis is one of the most common, least recognized illnesses in both the developed and developing countries, thus it is crucial to create awareness about it at the earliest.”
Present at this conference were, Dr. Shirish Prayag, Director, Prayag Hospital, Dr. Ajit Yadav, Chairman, Niramay Hospital, Dr. Deepak Salunkhe, Chairman, ISCCM Pune branch, Dr. Kapil Zirpe, Director, ICU, Ruby Hall Clinic, Dr. Sameer Jog, Incharge ICU, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Dr. Subhal Dixit, ICU Incharge, Sanjeevan and MGM Hospital, Dr. Manish Pathak, Secretary ISCCM Pune branch.
