Cleaning your drains may be more important than you originally though according to plumbers. Here's why it is important and how the process works.

Cleaning your drains is an important part of keeping your home in running order but it is also a job that many people avoid due to it being a bit of a pain and due to the ‘if I can’t see the problem, it doesn’t exist’ issue. Your drains can get clogged with hair, grease and other items very easily and it is not always easy to detect whether you have a problem until it’s too late.

This is why regular maintenance is necessary and it should be part of your routine to clean out your drains to avoid bad smells and general clogs as it reduces buildup and the job can be done quickly and easily with common tools or resources. This article hopes to explain why clogged drains need to be cleared, how often you should do it and how you should do it.

Why should you clean your drains regularly?

Many people don’t realise how important it is to clean their drains regularly. Drains are one of the most commonly used fixtures in our homes, and yet they are often overlooked when it comes to cleaning and seen as an inconvenience. Dust, dirt, hair, and grease can build up in drains, causing them to become clogged and eventually lead to bigger problems and damage. They can also produce unpleasant and nasty smells in your home which, in your kitchen and bathroom, is obviously far from ideal.

How often should you clean your drains?

How often you need to clean your drains depends on how often they are used. If you have a family of four and everyone takes showers every day, you’ll need to clean your drains more often than someone who lives alone and only uses the shower once a week. In general, it’s a good idea to clean your drains at least once a month, but more frequently if you notice any build-up.

How do you clean your drains?

Cleaning your drains is easy to do and only takes a few minutes. You’ll need a plunger and a drain snake or auger. First, use the plunger to try to dislodge any blockages. If that doesn’t work, feed the drain snake or auger into the drain until you feel resistance. Slowly turn the auger until you break through the clog. Once the clog is cleared, flush the drain with hot water to remove any residue. You can also use the classic baking powder and vinegar trick where you pour a combination down the drain using the reaction to help unclog the sink. You can also use hot water and dish soap which is quite effective against grease.

Regularly cleaning your drains will help to prevent clogs, and will also keep your drains looking and smelling fresh. A few minutes of attention each month will go a long way in keeping your drains clear and reducing weird smells.
