BatX Energies: Recycling Lithium-Ion Batteries for the EV Era

Gurgaon, India, August 16, 2022 - Here is some good news that might help expedite the creation of an EV ecosystem in India. BatX Energies has developed its own proprietary Net Zero Waste, Zero Emissions process, after years of scientific research and experimentation, for recycling end-of-life Lithium-ion batteries to solve the severe challenge of EV penetration.

Besides its advanced methodology, BatX Energies Pvt. Ltd. is involved in international initiatives related to Climate Goals, Energy and Circular Economy, including UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Net-Zero by 2070. The company believes in creating a circular economy by recycling lithium-ion batteries. Circularity is a more straightforward concept, meaning a product is created with its end-of-life. In a Circular Economy, once the product is used and reaches its end of life, it has been recycled to send back to the manufacturers rather than dumping it into landfills. In a nutshell, the Circularity movement's motto is 'use, recycle, reuse'. As the number of trained, legitimate e-waste handlers, dismantlers, and recyclers increases, e-waste management will benefit immensely.

According to BatX Energies, the demand for raw materials used to manufacture lithium-ion batteries is currently in the range of 1,200,000 metric tonnes as of 2022 for Electric Vehicles alone. This range is expected to increase and reach 7,500,000 tonnes of required materials by 2030.

As there is already a shortage of rare earth materials, the country has no choice but to recycle end-of-life or use lithium-ion cells. This is because all the rare materials used to manufacture the li-ion batteries can be extracted from these li-ion cells. The recycling process can gradually reduce the dependency on mining and reintroduce the raw materials to the manufacturing part, establishing a sustainable circular economy. Otherwise, these metals are dumped into the waste, which can be hazardous to the environment.

However, only 5% of these batteries are recycled domestically, which indicates a lack of technological expertise. Battery recycling is carried out widely in the unlicensed, untrained sector, just like other e-waste, and this seriously endangers the environment and the workers' health. The provincial or federal pollution control boards have recently ordered the closure of many of these impromptu units due to decisions made by the National Green Tribunal.

But doing so increases unemployment. Environmental specialists emphasise the need to assist these informal actors economically and through technical training to integrate them into the legal industry. They recommend establishing e-waste recycling hubs where microbusiness owners can pool their technical resources and know-how.

Process of Recycling Li-ion Batteries at BatX Energies
After a great deal of trial and error and many sleepless nights, BatX Energies have perfected a process to extract Rare Earth metals from used Lithium-ion cells. Here’s how it works.

Reverse Logistics

The supply of used Li-ion cells comes from various sources but is always procured in the safest, most ethical and responsible way. Most cells tend to come from Electronics, EVs, and other devices. For the time being, BatX Energies source these cells from all over India and are open to sourcing them from abroad.

The company procures the three most common lithium-ion cells: Prismatic Cells, Cylindrical Cells and Pouch Cells. BatX Energies uses the latest technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Blockchain to constantly improve efficiency and overall safety, raw material quality, and consistency.

Segregation

When the shipment of used lithium-ion cells is received, it is immediately passed through a barrage of tests. This is the first step of the proprietary automated process established by BatX Energies. In this test, cells are checked for their overall quality, how much charge remains, and how they are chemistry and composition. The Net Zero Waste, Zero Emissions initiative completely discharge all the remaining energy from batteries used in the power plant.

Mechanical Process

BatX Energies has the proprietary seven-layer mechanical process, which includes shredding and crushing, explicitly created to allow for easy separation of Black Mass from the other secondary materials and maximise the yield of both.

The primary product of their mechanical process is high-grade Black Mass which is 99% pure. They have efficiency and consistency to produce this purity level in every batch.

This process ensures that all the Secondary Products from Black Mass extraction, such as Plastic, Aluminium, Steel and Copper, are all neatly separated, collected and ready to send for subsequent application.

Chemical (Hydrometallurgical) Process

A proprietary Hydrometallurgical process uses synthesised chemicals that can be used repeatedly and infinitely. Once the Rare Earth metals have been extracted, they return to their original state.
