Comparing between the government employees and people working for private sector organizations.

Government Jobs VS Private Jobs

At one period there used to be so many vacancies in the Indian government sector, which never filled up completely. Some of the many reasons for this could be a lack of people available with proper skills, qualifications, etc. In those times, if a person is a graduate could easily be selected for a government job. There never used to be any competitive exams, serious preparations for government jobs, or serious interviews. The only formal interview was conducted to select a candidate who possesses a graduation. Though a person who is a government employee used to get great respect from the society, many people refused to join government jobs. People who belong to a higher class, landlords, people who are in caste based occupations, businessmen hardly used to apply for the latest govt jobs. They were only interested to continue what their fathers or forefathers used to do by profession and wanted to move forward their legacies.

As the time passed people started knowing the value and importance of latest govt jobs. With this change in the importance of these jobs which gradually increased and today, even highly qualified person has never hesitated to apply for a last grade gov. job. The competition is increased to such extent that for a single post, the ratio is also increasing from thousands to lakhs. Well settled person in a private sector job is still aiming to get into government jobs. During the recent global slump many employees got pink slips and there were no reasons for them to raise a question against their employers. These employees include top level managers who get axed due to the cost cutting. Though the current market is completely seemed recovered from the recession, private employees still have no guarantee of their jobs even they served the organization for years. It is one of the key reasons which is also driving people to government sector jobs. Some of the other factors which are making the job applicants crave for govt jobs are discussed below:

High Salary: After the recent revise in the pay commission (Revision of 6th pay commission) the government employee is highly paid on par with a private employee working in multinational company. Before this, if salary of a father was 20000 to 25000 his son or daughter used to earn between 40-50k per month. Now things have changed with this alteration and government employee is getting a payment more than equal to a private employee working in a good organization.

Medical reimbursement: There is a special act set up by the government for the medical benefits of its employees to protect them and keep them fit for the work. This act in the name of ESI (Employee State Insurance) built many hospitals for treating its employees and set up dispensaries to distribute the medicines without any charge. Though this is extended to the private sector, the benefits that a government employee can avails is more compared to a pvt. employee.

Planned future and Life: For a govt employee there is no feeling of job insecurity with which he can do his work with more dedication. Once a person is selected for a job he can adjust a life based on his salary and secure the future of not only himself but for the entire family. He can plan for his retirement, child education, insurance, home loans etc.

Leaves and holidays: Compared to a private employee a government employee can avail more leaves and holidays. If a person is working in a central services he only has to work for 5 days a week and this rule may change depending on the state governments. For all the festivals the employee gets the holidays along with the paid leave and sick leaves. To this there is a long leave benefit for the employee who is going abroad for a long time.

No pressure and targets: As the employee has to work within the scope of his job, there will be no feeling of pressure. Also, there will be less answerability compared to the private jobs with no additional targets.

Preference: Government employees will be given preference in certain jobs such as doing survey, election duties, campaigning for government schemes, polio Sundays etc. with additional payments.

Prestige and respect: In times where people refused the government jobs for the prestige of having family businesses, being landlords, etc., the government employee will be having a special respect compared to a private employee. Even if he is a low grade employee a tag called ‘Government’ adds his respect and prestige in the society.

Promotions: Unlike the private jobs employee who has to work hard with a quality performance to get promotions, a government employee promotion is fixed in advance. It is completely based on the duration of the work did, seniority and education which is the key consideration for promotions.

Additionally, there may be many other benefits of being a government employee, grabbing one job would be equally difficult. One of the spokesperson of a top political party suggested youth to stop aiming for govt. jobs and try to differently forget self employment. This if taken on a positive note is also correct in the current scenario. Also with the increasing talent in the present generation youth, many small startup companies are getting successful with a good attitude. If they are only dependent on aiming for govt jobs, these successes wouldn’t have been possible today.
