Stock Market Post-Elections: History of Presidents

Posted December 17, 2016 by cdnasales

Is the latest stock market rally post-election of Mr. Trump normal or outside historical averages? And, what should we expect next year?

The recent market rally -- the Dow up almost 9% since the Presidential Election -- is higher than any President-elect since Eisenhower in the post-World War II era. The next closest market gain occurred under JFK. Between Election Day and Inauguration Day, 4 Presidents-elect saw increases and 5 saw declines.

Will this higher than historical performance continue next year? Looking at historical results, we can measure how much markets increased during the first full year of a Presidency, and examine first-year Presidents as a subset. If the market continues to outperform historical averages under President Trump, we can then use an estimated finish point for 2016, and project where we think the market will wind up at the end of 2017.
