WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT UKCA MARKING

All UKCA technical documentation must be meticulously preserved and stored for at least ten years following product introduction in order to be produced for examination when required.

The United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union has enforced new ways of selling items and importing and exporting commodities in order to safeguard the safety of manufacturers and end users. Following the UK’s exit from the EU, UKCA marking will replace CE marking as a means of demonstrating product compliance with standards. This includes a wide range of products, but especially construction materials, which are vital to delivering the future’s safe and efficient built environment.

Any equipment sold in the UK that previously held a CE label will now bear a UKCA mark. This assures the consumer that the producer has met all relevant health and safety rules, environmental legislation, and applicable standards for the product, and that it is safe and lawful to use. It includes many of the similar products that previously carried the CE mark, such as electrical devices, radio equipment, PPE, and toys, as well as the additional addition of aerosol products.

Definition of UKCA Marking

The new name “UKCA” refers for “UK Conformity Assessed,” and it defines to the new product certification system that is now required for manufactured items sold in England, Wales, and Scotland. The new mark can be used in addition to the old mark, although items for Northern Ireland must still have the CE mark for the time being.

All UKCA technical documentation must be meticulously preserved and stored for at least ten years following product introduction in order to be produced for examination when required. Documents should show how the product is made and demonstrate compliance with applicable legislation. A UK Declaration of Conformity will be also required, which will be broadly identical to the declaration formerly required by the EU.

When Does The UKCA Mark Become Effective?

The new guidelines took effect on Brexit Day, the final day of 2020. In fact, the UKCA legislation become enforced on January 1, 2021, in accordance with the original Statutory Instruments (SI) drafted for the EU Exit. To allow enterprises to adapt to the new standards, the CE certification will be available in most situations until January 1, 2023, but only in the United Kingdom and for areas where UK and EU rules are the same. Otherwise, the products cannot be placed on the market, even if they are manufactured before December 31, 2022, because they lack the UKCA.

The UKCA marking is applicable to the following product categories:

• Pyrotechnics
• Simple Pressure Vessels
• Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments
• Measuring Instruments
• Measuring Container Bottles
• Lifts
• Electromagnetic Compatibility
• Equipment For Potentially Explosive Atmospheres (Ukex)
• Radio Equipment
• Toys
• Pressure Equipment
• Personal Protective Equipment (Ppe)
• Gas Appliances
• Machinery
• Low Voltage Electrical Equipment
• Recreational Craft And Personal Watercraft
• Equipment For Use Outdoors
• Ecodesign
• Aerosols

Some products are covered by the UKCA marking, although there are some specific rules. They are Medical devices Rail interoperability, Construction products, Civil explosives, Marine equipment, cableways, Energy using products, Transportable pressure equipment and Hazardous substances (RoHS).

How can we use the UKCA mark?

When you affix the UKCA marking on the product, it must be plainly visible, readable, and indelible. It may be included in manuals or other supporting literature on occasion, although this is dependent on the specific restrictions that apply to the product.

UKCA markings can only be affixed to a product by you as the manufacturer, your authorized representative (where permitted by applicable legislation), or if the products are marketed under your name or trademark.

You must not affix any marking, sign, or inscription that is likely to mislead another person as to the meaning or form of the UKCA marking, or affix any marking that would damage the visibility, legibility, or meaning of the UKCA marking.

The UKCA marking cannot be applied to products unless there is a legal necessity to do so.

Format of UKCA:

Unless a different minimum dimension is stipulated in the relevant regulation, the UKCA marking is at least 5mm in height.
The UKCA mark should be clearly visible, legible, and permanent.
If you change the size of your marking, the letters that make up the UKCA marking must be proportionate to the version shown below.

How to affix the UKCA marking?

The UKCA marking should be put properly on the product or its packaging. If you can’t place it on the product where it’s readily visible and legible, you’ll have to attach it to the product packaging or related documentation, such as manuals or technical papers. The placement of the UKCA mark is normally restricted by individual regulations applicable to each product.

Technical Documents requirements:

You must keep records to demonstrate that your product meets the legal requirements. This must be retained for a minimum of 10 years after the item is sold. Your records must be retained in compliance with your state or province’s standards. Some of the documents and information you’ll need to keep are as follows:

1. The manufacturer’s address and any storage facilities
2. How the product is developed and manufactured
3.How the product has been demonstrated to meet the applicable requirements

The technical requirements (Technical File) and evaluation standards that must be completed to indicate UKCA compliance are similar to those for CE marking and the self-declaration of conformity system
