Rahul Dravid: The Great Wall of Indian Cricket

Rahul Dravid started playing cricket at a very young age. He also represented Karnataka at the under-15, under-17 and under-19 levels.

 
Rahul Dravid popularly known as ‘The Wall’ is a former Indian cricketer and captain. He is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. In 2012, he also played Indian Premier League as captain of the Rajasthan Royals.

Rahul Dravid is the fourth-highest run scorer in Test cricket after Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, Australia’s Ricky Ponting and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis. After Rahul Dravid, England’s Alastair Cook holds the fifth spot.

In 2000, Rahul Dravid was declared as one of the best five cricketers of the year by Wisden Cricketers Almanack. In 2004 at the inaugural ICC awards ceremony, he received the Player of the Year and the Test Player of the Year award.

In 2004, Dravid became the first and the only player to date to score a century in all the ten Test-playing countries.

On October 2012, Rahul Dravid holds the record for the most number of catches taken by a non-wicket-keeper player in Test cricket, with 210. Dravid played 286 Test innings in which he holds a unique record of never getting out for a Golden duck .

He holds the record of highest number of balls faced by any player in test cricket i.e. 31258 balls. He also holds the record for the highest time spent on the crease by any player in test cricket i.e. 44152 minutes.

In August 2011, he received a surprise recall in the ODI series against England and he declared his retirement from ODIs as well as Twenty20 International (T20I), and in March 2012, he declared his retirement from international and first-class cricket too.

On 1 November 2012, Rahul Dravid and Glenn McGrath were honored during the seventh annual Bradman Awards function in Sydney. Rahul Dravid also holds Padma Shri which is India's fourth highest civilian awards and the Padma Bhushan award which is India’s third highest civilian award.

In 2018, Dravid became the fifth Indian cricketer to be inducted into ICC Hall of Fame. Currently, he is an overseas batting consultant for the Team India and also the head coach for the Under-19 and 'A' teams.

When All-Rounder Hardik Pandya was named in India's 15-man squad for the first two Tests of the England series, he said Rahul Dravid has helped him become better. For his brilliant rise, he gives credit to Dravid.
