A recent report conducted by the Independent research commission supported by General Medical Council (GMC) found that 4 out of 10 doctors have started transforming their medical practice as a result of their medical appraisals during the last five years cycle.
Almost half of the doctors under the age of 50 years have brought about positive changes in their medical practice. This has been reported by the interim report conducted by the UK-wide researcher’s collaboration known as UMbRELLA which is a component of a 3 years research study to evaluate the impact of GMC revalidation on the practice of doctors since its conception in December 2012.
The GMC services have introduced medical appraisal and revalidation in order to ensure that the doctors are up to date and are fit to do medical practice and treat patients. It also gives them an opportunity to reflect upon their medical practice as well as their performance. The findings of the report verify that the revalidation has started making an impact which is positive for doctors as well as their patients.
In addition to showing the positive improvements, the report also highlights important issues and loopholes in the system introduced by GMC services. This will help to bring about improvements in the process and will contribute to the high standards of quality and safer patient care.
This interim report takes into account the views and opinion of a large group of doctors and gives an outstanding overview of how the medical revalidation has affected the entire medical profession. The report will become the part of the revalidation review that is to be conducted by Sir Keith Pearson who is a Chairman of GMC advisory board for revalidation.
The findings of this interim report will be further assessed and evaluated by the GMC services along with recommendations of Sir Keith and the Health Department report which will be published by the end of this year. By now almost 75% of the doctors have undergone their first revalidation. The final UMbRELLA report is due to be published during 2018.
