Dublin is the capital city of Ireland and is known for its rich history and culture. There are many things to do in Dublin; however, if you're looking for a fun day trip out of the city, then check out the famous 'Easter Rising' tour!

The tour takes place in Glasnevin Park, where the 1916 Easter Uprising took place. You'll learn about the uprising and hear some wonderful stories about it. The name Easter Rising comes from an Irish poem written around the year 1640. In the poem, the poet compares Ireland's struggle for independence with the resurrection of Christ. The Easter Rising was a rebellion led by Irish revolutionaries who sought to end British colonial rule in Ireland. The rebels took over the General Post Office (GPO) in Dublin and declared a republic. The leaders were executed after the uprising failed, but their followers continued fighting until the following year when the Anglo-Irish Treaty ended hostilities and granted dominion status to Southern Ireland and de jure recognition of its independence.

The Easter Rising was preceded on April 24th by a pro-independence parade in Dublin. Over 2 million people attended the march, including many prominent figures in the Irish nationalist movement, and the participants carried flags bearing images of revolutionary leader Pádraig Pearse. Several notable events occurred throughout the day, including the occupation of the GPO building and the formation of an executive council headed by Padraig Pearse. On May 1st, 1916, the rebel forces began shelling Dublin, resulting in mass civilian casualties. However, they did not manage to capture any strategic buildings, and the rebels surrendered without bloodshed two days later.

The Easter Rising took place just 80 years before the events of the 1916 Easter Rebellion. The latter event, however, became known as the Easter Rising due to the timing of the former event during your Dublin walking tour. There are several theories regarding the exact date of the Easter Rising. One theory suggests that the date was chosen deliberately to coincide with the original anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf, a 12th-century battle between Celtic Christian clans and Scandinavian Vikings. Another theory suggests that both events were planned simultaneously, and the date was chosen for practical reasons; the previous weekend, April 23, had been marked by the funeral of President William Butler Yeats.

The Easter Rising marks the first time since 1803 that three successive generations of the same family have held leadership roles in Ireland. Its leaders included Patrick Henry Pearse, Thomas Joseph Clarke, and his brother Willie Pearse. All three brothers were born in Co. Cork. Despite the failure of the uprising, the Easter Rising would go down in history as the largest armed insurrection in Europe prior to World War II. Estimates suggest that the Easter Rising involved approximately 5,000 men, women, and children. At least 437 civilians died during the conflict, while hundreds of combatants perished as well. A further 300 were killed during subsequent executions in England.

The leaders of the Easter Rising were executed at Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin on May 31st, 1916. Among those hanged were Patrick Henry Pearse and Thomas Francis Meagher. The easter rising tour is considered an important milestone in modern Irish history. Following the proclamation of a republic in 1922, the Republic of Ireland celebrates the centenary of the rising each year on Easter Sunday. The current president of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, has described the Easter Rising as the "beginning of our national story."

Today, there are still many monuments dedicated to the Easter Rising in Dublin and elsewhere in Ireland. These include the Proclamation Wall at Liberty Hall, the Pearse Monument in Glasnevin cemetery, the Thomas MacDonagh monument in O'Connell Street, and the Thomas Kelly memorial in St Catherine's College in Trinity College, Dublin. These are all located near where the Easter Rising took place, and commemorate the fallen fighters. Other locations include a statue of Pádraig Pearce outside the GPO and the grave of James Connolly in Glasnevin Cemetery.
