Gloucester Cathedral is hosting a five-day Latin course from The Latin Qvarter this August for anyone interested in the ancient world of Rome and its language—Latin.
You don’t have to know any Latin to start this course, but you will after five days!
This course sketches the history of early Rome and tells the story of the end of the republic and rise of the emperors.
Readings are taken from ancient Latin writers, and through their story-telling the course weaves a picture of the people of Rome, their lives, their history, their mythology, their aspirations and beliefs, their joys, foibles and cruelties.
Course teacher: George Sharpley
A university teacher of Latin whose Latin publications include Get Started in Latin (Hodder), Essential Latin (Routledge), Carmina Latina (Lingua) .
He has made two films of spoken Latin: Goddesses, Myths and Mortals and AD 61; and produced Latin readings for the Hay Festival.
The Lingua approach was perfectly balanced to provide enough material and teaching to challenge us students in homework and practical application outside of lessons, and an easy and fun environment during lessons to keep us engaged.
I started the course with Lingua with no French skills at all, and now have enough French to negotiate Paris trains and hotels and to stay in email contact with my non or poor English speaking French colleagues.
