PLOS Medicine Journal Releases Analysis of Sugar Industry

Posted April 9, 2015 by JacobWillam

For many it's not shocking to realize that the sugar industry, certainly a wealthy and influential would be able to influence the National Institute of Dental Research, and their 1971 National Caries Program in particular.

While the ideal is certainly for medicine and dentistry to be free from the corrupting influence of big business, the reality is the United States, this has not always been the case or is always the case. A huge example of this has recently been published in the medical authority journal PLOS Medicine titled the “Analysis of Sugar Industry Influence on the Scientific Agenda of the National Institute of Dental Research’s 1971 National Caries Program.” The information shared is being pointed to as “eye opening” both within the medical and dental industry and outside of it. It's incredibly important since the National Caries Program, was the leading dentist research into learning about and preventing tooth decay at the time.

“We used internal cane and beet sugar industry documents from 1959 to 1971 to analyze industry actions related to setting research priorities for the National Caries Program,” commented one of the author's of the analysis. “The sugar industry could not deny the role of sucrose in dental caries given the scientific evidence. They therefore adopted a strategy to deflect attention to public health interventions that would reduce the harms of sugar consumption rather than restricting intake.”

According to the study, the sugar industry used a multifaceted attack to undermine and misdirect the National Caries Program from the truth about the hugely negative effects their products have had on dental health in America. Some examples include: funding research with questionable applications; cultivation of relationships with National Institute of Dental Research leaders, in an effort to exert hidden influence; creations of misleading reports, and much more.

The conclusion that the authors came to pointed towards the Sugar Industry doing harm to overall dental health in the country due to these actions. With tooth decay being largely treatable with the right information to follow, this was clearly an action taken by big business to swell their profits at the expense of many normal citizens. Bringing attention to this, it's hoped can help prevent actions like this from occurring again in the future.
