OCEANS FROM HOME is a finalist in the world film festival Cannes

Synopsis

In the tender light of dusk, an elderly man and his young grandson journey across weathered landscapes to a simple graveside—a pilgrimage of love that will become a profound reckoning with history.
"Oceans From Home" follows Grandpa Cyrus as he navigates the delicate balance between protecting his grandson's innocence and revealing the brutal truths of their ancestral past. Against the haunting backdrop of Antebellum America, what begins as a personal memorial transforms into an intimate excavation of America's buried atrocities.
As twilight falls and crickets sing their evening chorus, Cyrus confronts his internal conflict—how much of history's weight should a child bear? Through his weathered eyes and heartfelt introspection, historical abstractions crystallize into visceral human experiences. The systematic trafficking of Africans. The methodical dispossession of Indigenous peoples. These are not distant historical footnotes but living memories etched into the family's DNA.
Director áAli DeSousa, whose artistic voice was forged in the crucible of Cabo Verde's liberation movement, masterfully interweaves archival footage with stirring dramatizations. The result is a tapestry where personal grief and collective trauma intersect, creating a meditation on memory, inheritance, and the courage required to face uncomfortable truths.
"Oceans From Home" refuses to sanitize America's foundational wounds, instead challenging viewers to confront how four centuries of oppression continue to shape our understanding of humanity and justice. In Cyrus's gentle revelations to his grandson, we witness not just the burden of history but the possibility of healing through truth-telling.
This unflinching yet deeply compassionate film transforms epigenetic memory into a visceral statement against injustice—building bridges between past struggles and contemporary urgency, weaving a universal narrative that calls us toward our shared human dignity.
