Work-life balance wins the “war for talent”, says CEO

In the ongoing “war for talent” across the US, with higher stakes than ever as economic experts predict an impending recession, work-life balance remains king. So, too, do the forward-thinking businesses that offer them, says Joseph Boll, CEO of Remote Worker, an online jobs board and resource website for remote workers, remote work jobseekers, and hiring managers, employers and HR personnel seeking to recruit and hire the top talent for remote positions.

It’s a trend that has remained consistent over the past year, and one that’s holding firm even in the face of the uncertainty that comes with a recession: American workers would rather quit their jobs than go without flexibility. This was the same sentiment expressed from as early as the end of 2021, when businesses were first beginning to discuss forcing employees to return to the office (RTO) after months of successful remote work. That was long before the initial speculation of an incoming recession even began.

But new studies being published just within the first few weeks of this new year are already indicating that, RTO or not, and recession or not, Americans are still demanding more flexibility from their employers. If these new studies are any indication, the Great Resignation/Great Reshuffling may persist even in the harsh economic times that come with a recession as most workers are still saying they would flat-out refuse to accept a job that does not offer at least some form of flexibility both in location and in hours.

“Workers are showing no fear about job insecurity,” notes Boll. “There was some speculation that a coming recession might ‘scare’ staff into accepting RTO, but — at least so far — that’s proving to not quite be the case.”

Rather, the CEO said it’s work-life balance that’s winning the war on talent, as employees hold firm to get the kind of job flexibility that affords them a more flexible lifestyle. At the same time, he says it’s long been the case that remote jobs are getting top picks of the best talent in the field. But now, in light of the seeming unwillingness of employees to bend to RTO mandates, the businesses that have already gotten ahead of potential shortages are even more so positioning themselves to succeed amid increasingly high stakes.

“If your strategy is to ‘wait it out’ until the recession — if it hits — becomes so bad that workers grow desperate, I’m afraid you’ll find yourself on the short end of the stick,” said Boll.
