Decatur, TX – Lodging a successful battle against breast cancer sometimes means opening the door on the potential for treatment-related side effects. One common condition that may arise from necessary treatments to fight this disease is lymphedema. Problematic and sometimes quality of life altering, this particular complication can be kept to a minimum if early detection and rapid intervention occur.

“Breast cancer patients and their healthcare providers must be aware of the potential for this side effect so that steps can be taken to prevent the worst symptoms of the condition from arising,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the North Texas Cancer Center at Wise. “While lymphedema is technically not curable, early treatment can limit the impact it has on women’s lives.”

Lymphedema arises following damage to or removal of lymph nodes. Since both are quite likely in the treatment of breast cancer, especially in regard to the removal of sentinel nodes to gauge the spread of cancer, women need to be aware of this side condition. The illness occurs when blockage in the lymphatic system prevents lymph fluid from draining properly. This can cause a feeling of heaviness in the extremities, swelling, a hardening of the skin and a restricted range of motion, among other symptoms.

“When lymphedema is detected early, it’s possible to slow and limit its symptoms,” says Dr. Echt. “Women should be mindful of any signs of this condition and report problems immediately to their healthcare providers.”

If lymphedema is detected early, interventions such as pneumatic compression, lifestyle changes and exercises may keep the worst of symptoms at bay. The key is preventing extreme complications before they arise to keep range of motion intact.

Women who are undergoing breast cancer treatment or who have undergone treatment should discuss this complication with their physicians. Those who have concerns about swelling or heaviness in the limbs should report symptoms to their doctors as quickly as possible.
