President of Acuity Contracting Group Brian Drennon shares on his journey as an Air Force aviator and the decision to transition to civilian life.

After working in the United States Air Force for nine years, Captain Brian Drennon made the decision to leave the service and return to his Rockwall home. Coming from a family of warriors – his father flew Army helicopters in Vietnam, and his brother served with an Army Reserve unit in Iraq – it would have been expected that Brian Drennon would serve in the military for a long period.

However, like many young soldiers, the repetitive tours of duty in overseas locations, combined with the short time at home before the next tour, may have given Brian Drennon enough to think about. Additionally, he had two little girls, aged five and three, whose selected special moments he had missed while he was away.

“I made a tough and agonizing decision to separate from the military. Tough and agonizing because of the outstanding people I worked with and the fact I loved doing my job and serving my country. Too much time away from my family is what finally made the decision for me. I have two little girls who I didn’t want to be away from anymore. I missed some milestones in their young lives and I didn’t want that to happen again.”

That Drennon loved the work was without question. He had spent a considerable amount of time training to work on a B-1 Bomber, and his efforts had been rewarded with a position on the lead bomber during the United States first massed precision bombing of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He had also served tours of duty in Oman, and in between served as a flight instructor at Pensacola, Florida.

Once retired, Brian Drennon leaned on his background in business and finance to establish a company, Acuity Contracting Group, which is a specialist distributor of medical supplies, allograft tissue, and medical devices with a focus on spine and orthopedic procedures. The company has grown in leaps since its inception, and is now a leader in the medical device and supply distribution industry.

Looking back, Drennon doesn’t regret anything about his career.

“I wouldn’t change anything from my time in service. I was led by great leaders; I led great people; and made great friends.”
