Joel Lewinsohn has been a math and physics teacher for 15 years. He has taught at both the high school and college level and is licensed to teach in both Washington and Montana.

Joel Lewinsohn’s career as a teacher has been based in two main subjects: math and physics. Both are subjects he loves and he tries to inspire the same love within his students. Joel Lewinsohn also appreciates the benefits of extracurricular activities and involved himself in school activities as a soccer coach.

Joel Lewinsohn’s career as a mathematics teacher began in 1997. “I left my position in mechanical engineering to become a math and science teacher. I began teaching pre-algebra, algebra, chemistry and biology at Lakeside School District in Nine Mile Falls, Washington,” says Joel Lewinsohn. Apart from mathematics and science, Joel Lewinsohn helped guide students as a student advisor.

After two years, Joel Lewinsohn left Nine Mile Falls for Stanwood, Washington. At Stanwood High School, Joel Lewinsohn began teaching more advanced courses. “My skills as a math teacher were put to the test. I taught five different subjects: algebra, algebra-trigonometry, pre-calculus, geometry, and physics,” says Joel Lewinsohn.

Once again, Joel Lewinsohn became involved with his school. He helped new math teachers by becoming a mentor and was a SCEA representative. He also joined the Math Curriculum Adoption Committee, SIPTAP, and the Secondary Redesign Architecture Committee.

Until 2007, Joel Lewinsohn remained in Washington but moved to Montana where he took another position as a math teacher and Girls’ Varsity Soccer Coach. Again, Joel Lewinsohn joined several school programs. “I involved myself in the district by joining the Libby Public School’s Math Curriculum Adoption Committee and Building Consolidation Committee. I helped build leadership by mentoring new math teachers and participated in the Professional Learning Communities; Response to Intervention,” says Joel Lewinsohn.

In 2012, Joel Lewinsohn happily returned to Washington. A jump from high school, he began teaching math at Wenatchee Valley College in Wenatchee, Washington. The subject materials taught at the college continue to resemble what he taught in high school with the exception of innovating software to record and post daily instruction online. “Teaching college math is different yet similar to high school. The environment is different but the material is the same. I enjoy it very much,” says Joel Lewinsohn.
