Justin Sliney is a banker who volunteers his time to several nonprofits

Justin Sliney is a banker who currently works for Mitsubishi UFJ Securities USA, where he is a Director who works as the business manager to the trading room. He holds a Master of Business Administration from New York University Stern, and has many years of experience with capital markets, risk management and business development.

But he has an active life away from work, which in many ways is a far cry from the conventional image of a stuffy banker. He is a certified DJ who completed rigorous training at Scratch DJ Academy in New York. He also studied the culinary arts at the French Culinary Institute, even as he held down a job at Rabobank International, a multinational banking and financial services company based in the Netherlands. “I worked weekends pro-bono as a prep cook at a pop-up restaurant in NYC in order to further improve my culinary skills,” he recalls.

Justin Sliney has also focused on doing what he can to make the world a better place. “I have participated in an eight day volunteer trip every year for the past six in either Nicaragua, Peru or Dominican Republic,” he says, “building homes, community centers, aqueducts, or women's clinics, among other projects.” He volunteers through Bridges to Community, which engages in sustainable, long-term community development projects that have a lasting impact on impoverished areas. “On these trips I live with the communities I’m serving, with no access to electricity or running water. It is always my favorite week of the year.”

Short-term volunteer service trips like this are increasingly popular in both the United States and in Europe, through non-profit organizations like Bridges to Community, the Peace Corps, and Engineers Without Borders. Hundreds of thousands of people volunteer their time, skills and labor to these organizations, taking part in programs aimed at improving the health and well being of those in undeveloped countries. Bridges to Community plans and carries out community development work in the areas of housing, health, education and economic development.

Justin Sliney also volunteers his time at a New York charter school called KIPP, which serves low-income minority communities. He is a member of KIPP’s Associate Council, through which he helps with fundraising efforts, and educating the public about the school’s value and successes.
