It is not the same to write blog posts or other online articles. The standards of journalism for news pieces must be similar to those used in print publications. The news pieces must have headlines that grab attention, good leads, and deliver relevant, detailed, and thoughtful information in a fun way. It's hard to achieve all of this in an article that is typically 400-700 words long. These tips will assist you in writing online news articles.

Headlines

Your headlines are the first thing that your readers see and they should grab their attention. Rarely do they contain a full sentence. The headline is usually a fragment of words that are meant to grab attention and draw the reader in.

Leads

It is the first sentence of the story. The lead is the first sentence of the story. Here you can either grab your reader's attention or lose them. Leads shouldn't be longer than 35 words or two sentences. The sentence tries to include the Five Ws of journalism - who and what, when and where, why, while placing the most important details first.

Body

You can draw the reader in with a powerful headline and good lead. The body is where the meat of the story lies. The body paragraphs are arranged in an inverted pyramid. The most relevant or interesting bits will be in the top paragraphs, while the background or underlying information will be in the later paragraphs.

Keep paragraphs short, between three and five sentences. Internet readers get bored easily. They will stop reading if they find the paragraphs too long. Each paragraph should only contain one idea.

Editing

Editing and revision are essential for any writing. Check your spelling. Check punctuation, grammar and spelling. Double-check the spelling of all names. Avoid words such as "that" and "next." Write news articles in the third person.

Sources

Citing sources is very important. You should check with the site where your work will be published. Each website has different rules about how to cite sources. Some sites prefer to list them at the end. Some prefer to hyperlink the sources with relevant words within the article. It is important to use multiple sources of information in both online and printed articles. Find another source if the first one is suspect. If you're unsure, don't include the information.
