Food industries are now required to provide quality assurance of their products

The EU food hygiene law (93/43/EG) requires food business operators to ensure that their products meet quality requirements.

Furthermore, food business operators are required to control the quality of the product throughout its life-cycle, from the stage of raw materials up to the end product, and to prevent food poisoning.
This has resulted in HACCP being adopted as a quality control system by food manufacturing companies. For metal detectors to be used in accordance with HACCP, a number of criteria should be met, including that: The product of interest is easily detectable by a metal detector. The metal detector must be calibrated to the smallest metal test objects it can detect.

Metal detection is a method of testing the presence of metal objects in foodstuffs. This method of testing is applied to foodstuffs, which are intended for human consumption, and it involves identifying metal objects or metal objects in foodstuffs that do not comply with food hygiene requirements.

This testing is conducted by using metal detectors. Because of its specificity, the use of metal detector for food products can ensure compliance with food hygiene requirements for a very large range of food products. Thus, a number of food companies use metal detectors to ensure compliance with food hygiene requirements.

Quality control sampling should be performed regularly, preferably on a continuous basis, to ensure that metal contamination is not greater than the set limit. Corrective action must be taken after detection by the metal detector. As with all other components of HACCP, the metal detector’s operational working instructions must be written down, and all actions must be documented.

This also applies to the metal detector’s records. It is advisable to draw up an operational working instruction for the metal detector which, for example, specifies the measures to be taken after metal detection and the regular testing procedure. This is intended to ensure that the metal detector operates stably, reliably, and without false alarms.

The operational working instruction should be accompanied by a test schedule and a schedule for corrective action after metal detection. Furthermore, the metal detector for food should be regularly checked and calibration-certified. The metal detector should be subject to preventive maintenance. The document should be accompanied by a quality label and a certificate of compliance.

Now, besides these guidelines, the food industries can also make use of metal detectors to protect their products. The metal detector is being used for a number of purposes, such as:

• Testing the products for their compliance with food hygiene standards.
• Testing whether the correct quality measures are being taken during product preparation
• Testing whether the correct quality measures are being taken during intermediate storage.
• In order to make sure that the products are free from metal contamination and are therefore suitable for final consumption.

A well-functioning and well-calibrated metal detector for food is the single most important factor for ensuring reliable and correct identification of metal objects in foodstuffs. The use of metal detectors to ensure compliance with food hygiene requirements is increasingly common in the EU.

However, the use of metal detectors to determine the metal content of foodstuffs is still a legal grey area. The European Commission has recently proposed an EU-wide quality assurance system for EU-wide adoption. This system foresees the use of metal detectors as the main tool to determine compliance with food hygiene requirements.

Quality assurance of metal objects in foodstuffs is currently the responsibility of food hygiene authorities. However, because of the growing importance of metal detection for the safety of food products, and because the use of metal detectors can be applied to a large variety of food products, more and more food companies are testing their products for metal contamination. This has resulted in more and more requests for the use of metal detectors in the food industry.

To summarise: All the metal detectors currently available on the market are safe and reliable. The metal detector meets the requirements of the food hygiene law, and it is a valuable tool for food business operators, as they are able to detect, and then effectively prevent, food contamination caused by metal contamination.
