One of the most important pieces of any home theater install is a booming surround sound system. An awesome and well placed home theater surround sound system can really help to enhance the movie watching experience. So how can you get the best out of your home theater surround sound system?

First, don't be afraid to spend a little money. Like many products, you generally get what you pay for when it comes to home theater systems. While the average user doesn't need a super expensive, high-end setup, it usually pays to go for at least a mid-priced system if you can afford to do so. Low-end setups often skimp on features and sound quality that mid-to-high-end systems have.

If a demo unit is available in the store, don't be afraid to play around with it if possible. Listen to several different demo units in order to get a feel for the one that seems to sound the best to your ears.

Once you have purchased your system, it is time to set it up. The most important part of setting up a home theater is appropriate placement of the various speakers. Try to line up your center speaker with the center grill of your television set as this will help deter noise distortion. Your front speakers should be at least six feet apart.

Try to position your left and right surround speakers about 2 feet behind your seating area, and at about ear level when sitting. If you have rear surround speakers, you will want to place them at about head level when standing if possible. In all cases, you will want to turn the speakers so that they point towards the center of the area in which you plan to sit while watching movies.
