Dr. Pramod Kumar Rajput, a respected figure in the pharmaceutical industry, recently sat down with Pharma Now for an in-depth conversation about his personal journey, leadership philosophy, and the importance of mentorship. What started as a lack of proper guidance in his own early career has now become a mission to coach and mentor future leaders. With 69% of senior global leaders already being Indian, Dr. Rajput believes the number can rise to 90% with the right direction and mindset.
Originally from Gorakhpur, Dr. Rajput had a strong background in mathematics and science. Though he had the opportunity to pursue engineering, he was inspired by pharmaceutical professionals and their role in alleviating human suffering. That inspiration led him to an interview with Cadila, where he began his career in 1982 as a medical representative. From there, his steady growth through roles like area manager, regional manager, and business development manager set the foundation for his leadership journey.
In 2001, he transitioned from field roles to the corporate office at Cadila, where he encountered a new kind of challenge: learning to balance competition with collaboration. It was here that he began to deeply understand the importance of observing others’ strengths and continuously developing his own. Reflecting on the new generation of professionals, Dr. Rajput noted a trend of frequent job switching, driven largely by unmet expectations. He emphasized that while many young people are academically talented, they often lack workplace readiness and mentorship. To bridge this gap, he advocates for stronger collaboration between academia and industry, along with a greater focus on soft skills like empathy, respect, and communication.
To young professionals, his advice is simple but profound: invest in yourself. Rather than chasing quick financial gains, focus on building a solid foundation that leads to long-term growth. Those who do so, he says, become “solid professionals” instead of “hollow achievers.” A significant turning point in his career came when he relocated from Lucknow to Bengaluru in the mid-90s. Working in a new environment and launching products for a different demographic helped him grow as a more inclusive and culturally aware leader.
Dr. Rajput lives by the belief that every individual is a book and we should take the good lessons from each one. His journey has been shaped by continuous learning, adaptability, and a willingness to take risks and leave comfort zones behind. He is also the author of “Leaders with Ladders”, a practical, handbook-style bestseller that guides readers through the basics of leadership, essential soft skills, and key mindset traits such as integrity and punctuality. The book is dedicated to startups, changemakers, and young leaders across industries.
Reflecting on his life and leadership lessons, Dr. Rajput believes that mindset and attitude shape everything. He encourages positivity, humility, and personal growth through constant learning. If given the chance to change anything about his life, he says he would simply choose to learn more because learning, to him, is life’s true mantra.
