French surgeon Francois de la Peyronie described Peyronie’s Disease back in 1743 and it was written about dating back as early as 1687. Yet men today still deal with the condition and it still remains so embarrassing that men still don’t talk about it. The most common symptoms of Peyronie’s according to http://www.peyronies.us/diagnosticpeyronies.html are a curvature, lump or hard area of the penis that leads to penile pain and painful erections.

Peyronies Disease primarily affects men between the ages of 45 – 60, although an age range of 18 to 80 years has been reported. The average age at onset is 53. It affects mostly Caucasians and is more common in Scandinavian and European decent.

According to the US National Library of Medicine National Institute of Health, some studies have shown occurrence rates of Peyronie’s Disease range from 1% to 4%; but autopsy studies state that 22% of men have some lesions on the penile tunica albuginea, which shows men are not getting treated for Peyronies Disease while they are alive, mostly because of the stigma associated with the condition.

Previous Peyronie’s Treatments

Vitamin E is the oldest treatment and still the most commonly recommended treatment today. Other treatments include the use of Colchicine, Verapamil , Potaba and Collagenase, all of which have side effects ranging from mild to major. In some cases, a doctor might even recommend surgery, which can be pretty frightening.

• Vitamin E has been used to treat Peyronie’s Disease since about 1945. This treatment is also effective for scars of all types.
• Potassium Para Amino Benzoate or Potaba is approved by the FDA as a possible treatment for Peyronie’s disease, although in larger does it is linked to intestinal problems.
• Colchicine has been used for years to treat Peyronie’s disease and it is affective to fight against scar tissue.
• Verapamil is typically given as an injection right into the scar tissue. This medication can mess with the scar tissue precursors, so take that into consideration before opting for this treatment.
• Collagenase is currently an investigational drug but it is supposed to digest the scar.

Two New Treatments Show Promise

Xiaflex

Xiaflex it currently still not approved yet for Peyronies is an intralesional injection into the area affected that is given in the doctor’s office. The object is to soften the scar tissue, which in turn reduces the penis curvature with the focus on improving your sexual function and minimizing the negative aspects of the Peyronie’s disease.

One study with Xiaflex had participants receive three injections of Xiaflex, each on a separate day in a 7-10 day period. After 12 weeks, participants received a second series of three injections. Patients were evaluated at 3 months then again at 6 months and 9 months. Clinical success at three months was 58% and at six months 53%.

Another study gave participants 3 injections of Xiaflex given one per day with least one day separating each, and given over a 1-week period. Patients then received 2 additional series of three injections, which were each spaced 6 weeks apart. In 8 out of 9 patients who completed the study, 89% had a 24% reduction in deviation angle, and 67% of subjects were greatly improved after treatment with Xiaflex.

In both studies, the most common adverse events reported were localized reactions at the injection site ranging from mild to moderate in severity.
