Stephan U. Breu ) was honored with a special award. He was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the Department of Education of the Republic of the Philippines, Region XI, Schools Division of Davao del Norte.

During a visit to ongoing projects in the provinces of Davao del Norte and Agusan del Sur on the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines, Stephan U. Breu from Tägerschen in the canton of Thurgau (Switzerland) was honored with a special award. He was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the Department of Education of the Republic of the Philippines, Region XI, Schools Division of Davao del Norte.

The ceremonial awarding took place during the Division Awarding Ceremony and Partnership Day “Kinaduyuwan: Araw ng Pagkilala”, held at the Herminigildo Baloyo Hall of the Tagum City Historical and Cultural Center, Tagumpay Theatre, in Tagum City. The event recognizes outstanding contributions to the development of education in the region.

Stephan U. Breu was honored for his sustainable support. At the core of his commitment are projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). His work primarily benefits disadvantaged and remote indigenous communities, where people often live under extreme conditions and lack basic infrastructure.

By establishing school infrastructure, learning centers, potable water pipelines and filters, as well as simple but hygienic sanitation facilities, Breu, together with local partners, creates the conditions necessary for many children and young people to attend school regularly in the first place. Cultural sensitivity is given high priority, with indigenous identities, languages, and ways of life being respected and integrated. His projects aim not only to build physical structures but also to foster self-confidence, community, and participation.

The certificate presented by the Department of Education expresses this recognition:

“In sincere appreciation of your invaluable support and partnership in promoting the programs, projects, and activities of the Department of Education, Division of Davao del Norte. Your unwavering commitment to the welfare of our learners and teachers has significantly contributed to the realization of our mission to provide quality and inclusive education. Your dedication and generosity have empowered our schools to overcome challenges and embrace opportunities for innovation, ensuring that all learners are given the chance to reach their full potential. Through your efforts, you have fostered a culture of collaboration and excellence that has left a lasting impact on the lives of countless students, teachers, and the entire community. This certificate is hereby awarded as a token of appreciation for your exemplary support and tireless efforts in advancing the cause of education in the Division of Davao del Norte.”

The region is characterized by great cultural diversity but also by socio-economic challenges. Many children of indigenous peoples (IPs) suffer from poverty, malnutrition, geographic isolation, and sometimes the loss of traditional ways of life. Support from international partners like Stephan Breu helps to break this cycle, open new future perspectives, and drive sustainable development forward.
