EXTENSIVE SURVEY SHOWS

PREFERENCES OF JEWISH VOTERS

FOR 2012 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Washington, DC --- According to a random survey of Jewish voters conducted by Moment Magazine, 62% of them believe that President Obama would best represent their interests as Jews. The percentage of those who believe that a President Romney would best represent their Jewish interests is 24%. The percentage of those who think that neither candidate would represent their interests is 13%.

A majority of respondents, 54% wrote that support for Israel would be a determining factor in their choice of president, while 37% wrote that it would be moderately important, and a mere 7% wrote not important at all. When asked which candidate would be most supportive of Israel, 37% chose President Obama, and 27% chose Governor Romney. 35% were undecided. When asked how important to you is President Obama’s relationship with Israel, 39% wrote moderately important, 36% wrote not important, and 24% wrote very important.

When asked if the president’s top concern should be arranging peace between Israel and the Palestinians, 63% replied no, 25% wrote maybe, and only 11% wrote yes. When asked if Israelis should be permitted to negotiate a peace agreement without outside interference, 55% responded yes, while 37% wondered if such as scenario was even realistic.

When the topic came to religion, 93% of respondents reported that Mitt Romney’s religion would not be factor in their choice of president; yet, a smaller 80% of respondents wrote that religion should not be a factor in this or any other presidential election. The 13% points differential is an unexplained inconsistency.

When asked if President Obama’s former relationship with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright should be an issue, 69% wrote no, while 22% wrote yes, and 8% were not sure.

Other than Israel, the two most important concerns of respondents are Medicare and Social Security. Those two issues, if treated negatively, would cause Jewish voters to switch their votes. Interestingly, only 48% of respondents receive Social Security payments, while 51% do not.

Since Medicaid and taxes have become important issues in the presidential campaign, the subject of poverty was raised. When asked if, as Jews, you feel a responsibility to care for the poor, 82% wrote yes, while 2% wrote no; 14% wrote sometimes.

Predicting how Jews will vote in the 2012 presidential election has become a topic of considerable interested; therefore, it may be a portent to note that in the last presidential election, 78% of Jews voted for Barack Obama, and 21% of them voted for John McCain.

Nadine Epstein, editor and publisher of Moment, said: “In August of 2008, our survey indicated that 70% of Jewish voters would vote for President Obama and 27% intended to vote for Senator McCain. Our tallies were very close to the actual results of the exit polls in November 2008, which indicated that President Obama had received 78% of the Jewish vote and John McCain had received 21%. I think that our current survey, therefore, will probably reflect the way Jews will vote in November 2012, despite all the talk about many more Jews voting Republican this time around.”

The Moment Magazine Presidential Survey was conducted over a two week period and there were 657 respondents.
