Laughter is known to have incredible benefits for our physical and mental health. Doctors, psychologists, researchers all agree that people who have a good sense of humor are not just happier, but healthier as well. Looking at some funny images or cracking a joke can instantly lighten up anyone’s mood and relieve stress.
When you’re feeling down, when you’re sick or when you have problems, the world and your personal life can look dark and gloomy. Getting too stressed can generate mental and physical problems and no one wants to have them. The best cure in these cases is to simply let the burden off and spend time doing something interesting and entertaining, like reading jokes or looking at funny images. A smile is all it takes to make you feel better and lighter. Laughter is true therapy, and studies have shown how this particular trait of humans allows them to enjoy better lives. First of all, laughter is incredibly beneficial for the body. As a person laughs, various groups of muscles are in motion; the contraction of muscles releases tension and strengthens muscles, just as exercise does. In fact, it seems that laughing at some jokes or funny images for 10 minutes can burn 50 calories! That’s a good incentive to keep you laughing! The contraction of muscles also improves blood circulation and helps the heart function optimally; I’m sure you’ve heard the expression ‘laughing with all your heart’.
Researchers have also found that laughing produces psychological changes. They are not sure how this happens exactly, but it seems that this process has a lot to do with the chemicals released in the organism. The brain instantly reacts when reading jokes or observing funny images. Once laughter is triggered, the brain releases specific chemicals, endorphins, which induce a state of well-being. Endorphins can relieve stress and pain, and can instantly make people feel better. Thus, laughing balances mental powers with physical ones. ‘Mens sana in corpore sano’ is an old Roman saying which means ‘A sound mind in a healthy body’. We have to keep both our minds and bodies healthy if we want to live good lives. It’s wondrous how laughing seems to satisfy both body and mind.
Humor is an intriguing trait of human beings. It induces a relaxed state of being and is the perfect energy booster. Laughter can even alleviate pain and some case studies have shown how patients suffering from certain illnesses felt better after watching comedies and entertainment programs. At the same time, humor has social benefits: it relaxes people, attracts other persons to us, strengthens the relationships between family members, friends or colleagues, it vastly helps in achieving optimal teamwork and can also help resolve conflicts. 10 minutes of laughing a day is all the therapy someone needs to stay healthy and positive. Next time your boss catches you and your colleagues reading jokes on the web, you can just say that you’re in a teambuilding session. That’ll cheer him up as well.
