Christians or "Your Christ"

Mahatma Gandhi, a missed opportunity to disciplship

I don't know how many people of the Christian religion have heard the story about Gandhi's deliberations about becoming a Christian and, more importantly, WHY HE DIDN'T? As it was told, he went into a certain Christian denomination's church in a country other than his (India) and he was escorted out because of the color of his skin.

I've heard two versions of his response to this and why he remained in his native religion of Hinduism. (1) "I would have become a Christian, until I met one and (2) "I like your Christ, I just don't like you Christians."

There's an age old expression in exercising caution in our affairs, especially as it pertains to religion. "Be careful. You may be the only Bible that another person will ever read." I'm glad that I wasn't a member or an attendee of the church what Gandhi walked into; that turned him away.

There's something misconstrued in our quest to change everyone to be "like us." I believe that Jesus said in the Bible to "Go make disciples of all nations," I don't think that he said to "Go evangelize everyone." There's a difference, at least this writer sees it that way. A disciple acts out of love, not out of judgment, and he/she sticks with the convert all the way down the road, from their conversion, through the bumps in the middle, and to the end. An evangelist (or, at least amateur ones) are more 'hit n' run.' "Hey, X number of people got saved this Sunday or at the tent revival." Can we trump that next time out? There is a difference, Jesus called it the 'utmost farthing,' I believe. How far will we go with those who we are trying to convert? That answer lies only within each of our souls and hearts.
