Drawings in building design and construction

Floor plans, elevations, sections, etc are required in building design and construction process to document all the design ideas of a building designer.

In order for a house design to take reality a complete set of construction drawings needs to be prepared. This set consists of floor plans at various levels for every floor, sections to showcase different levels, views to give a complete isometric view of the space, etc. Besides the above mentioned drawings the set also includes elevations (both interior and exterior), detail drawings for various areas, reflected ceiling drawings, etc. Separate drawings are used to show the electrical and plumbing lines in a building. Structural design is another important aspect of building design and construction. A structural expert (usually a civil engineer) is given the task of calculating all the design loads and accordingly designs a structure that can safely carry all those loads.

A floor plan of a house design is a simple line drawing of a room or a building. It is a representation of the three dimensional space in two dimension. It is a view of the particular room or building from above looking down at the floor of the space in context. Floor plan is drawn by cutting at a particular level. The usual level that is used in floor plans is the window sill level. The floor plan contains all details regarding position of walls, wall thickness, location of doors, windows, stairs, furniture, etc. All necessary dimensions are provided to facilitate the building design and construction process. The floor plans of a house design are always drawn to a particular scale which is mentioned in the drawing to provide the contractor a close estimate on any dimension that might not be mentioned in the drawing.
Elevation drawings are another important set of drawings in building design and construction. They contain drawings of the view of vertical components of a house design i.e. the walls. Again it is a two dimensional view representing the height and width. Details like wall finish, window height and width, etc that can not be shown clearly in floor plan are shown in elevation drawings. Elevations are also drawn to a particular scale which is mentioned in the drawing.

A reflected ceiling plan is view of the ceiling standing on the floor viewing downwards (unlike as the name suggests as if the drawing is drawn looking upwards). This set of drawings is necessary in building design and construction because it contains details of position of all kinds of fixtures like fans, lights, patterns on the ceiling, etc. Basically it shows all the details of design on the ceiling. The reflected ceiling plan is also drawn to scale which is mentioned on the drawing sheet.
Detail drawings provide specific details in both graphic and textual format about areas that has intricate details. Usually detail drawings are drawn at a larger scale to facilitate better representation of details.
